Vedic Mathematics – What Are They and How Do They Work?
When was the last time you did the billing calculation mentally? Is your kid suffering from mathematics phobia? If the above symptoms have hit you, it is high-time that you shifted to Vedic Mathematics. In is the ancient system of mathematical calculation which has its origin in India. No wonder, Indian kids are great at mental mathematics.
It’s a pity that our education system does not understand the value of Vedic mathematics. These calculations are unique in them and include even calculating complex roots and Calculus too! Surprised? Then, read on.
It was unfortunately becoming a lost art until a great saint and scholar from India sought its revival in the early 20th century. The world was shocked and delightfully surprised to see a mathematics system where you could calculate faster than a computer. Since then, this has been a research subject for thousands of scholars world-wide!
What is the Magic Art?
There is no magic and nothing of it is based on rote learning! It is purely derived from the theories we learnt at school. The truth is we never applied them to deal with practical computing problems and biggest culprit of them all is the calculator! The system of Vedic mathematics deals with 19 sutras (aphorisms) and 14 sub-sutras which are used in combination to solve even the toughest of calculations. The 19 sutras seem like cryptic instructions to deal with various mathematical problems.
The Sutras may be known from an internet search. At first they may seem to be totally strange and may not make any sense. Only after you start looking at the examples, you shall be able to grasp the sutras. And the best part is that if you can understand why it is like the way it is, you will never fail to calculate mentally and will be as accurate a computer!
Vedic mathematics has exhaustively covered the basics of addition, subtraction, multiplication (they call it repetitive addition) and division (repetitive multiplication and subtraction). Based on the four basic operations, they have been able to solve even complex numbers and Calculus problems. The best part is that you can calculate the result of complex and seemingly huge number roots in a matter of seconds. What’s more, the squaring and cubing and cube roots have been explained with adequate examples.
Examples
Beginning with a simple multiplication, what’s 8×7=? Write one number below the other,
8
7
Then, the base should be determined. Here, since they are close to 10, the base is 10. Then subtract the numbers from the base and write the results beneath. Find the cross difference for the first part and product for second part and then you have the answer!
8 -2
7 -3
————-
5 / 6 =56!
Similarly, various other calculations can be done using Vedic Mathematics.
